How Does the Surrogacy Process Work in Ghana

How Does the Surrogacy Process Work in Ghana? A Detailed Overview

Ghana has emerged as a preferred choice for those pursuing surrogacy to build their families. Under Act 1027, Ghana regulates surrogacy practices, though the legal landscape continues to develop, making professional legal guidance essential for prospective parents.

Medical Screening

The surrogacy process begins with thorough health screenings for both intended parents and the prospective surrogate. Medical experts evaluate the surrogate’s reproductive health, previous pregnancy history, and overall physical and psychological well-being. A woman who has experienced at least one successful pregnancy is considered an ideal candidate.

The intended parents are also required to undergo counselling to understand the medical procedures involved, including in vitro fertilisation (IVF), ensuring they are fully informed about the process ahead.

IVF and Embryo Transfer

Following medical screenings, the in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) process begins. During this phase, the intended mother’s eggs and the intended father’s sperm are combined in a controlled laboratory setting to form viable embryos. One or more embryos are then transferred into the surrogate’s uterus while she receives hormonal treatments to prepare her body for implantation and is carefully monitored throughout this critical period.

Pregnancy Monitoring

After successful embryo transfer and implantation, the surrogate receives comprehensive medical support throughout pregnancy. This includes regular prenatal visits to monitor the health of both the surrogate and the developing fetus, along with appropriate nutritional, medical, and emotional support to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Birth and Postnatal Procedures

When the baby is born, legal processes are initiated to transfer parental rights to the intended parents. This includes obtaining the child’s birth certificate and any necessary documentation for international travel if the family resides outside Ghana. The surrogate receives her agreed-upon compensation and continued support as she transitions out of the surrogacy arrangement, ensuring her well-being throughout the entire process.
